Fork leg guards wrap the lower fork tubes and protect the sliding surface from stone chips, gravel and trail debris. A scored or pitted fork tube is one of the most common causes of fork seal failure on adventure bikes ridden off-road — once the seal surface is damaged, the seal leaks oil regardless of its age or condition.

Fork seal replacement is a straightforward job in a workshop but a slow and expensive one on the road, especially far from a service centre. A fork leg guard prevents the problem before it starts.
